I’m reluctant to admit my growing appreciation for a holiday tied up in red ribbon rubbish and superficially sweetened See’s. Yet at the heart of it all, and my reason for honoring the day, is the straightforward (and profound!) message of love.
With all the suggestions, reminders and last minute deals, it’s clear that people celebrate this Valentine’s Day to varying degrees. Whether it’s through the glaze of a heart shaped diamond or a mouthwatering glazed donut, there is a thoughtful intention to each gift. At least I hope the motivation for giving has most to do with the action and less with the gift… Or in the case of these contributions, has everything to do with both!
This February 14th (and beyond) extend a single act of love to many across the globe. I’m pleased to highlight the heartfelt opportunity to “Name Your Love, Share Your Love”, part of Full Circle Exchange’s Wake Up To Justice-Dollar 4 Dollar campaign and partnership with CARE to fight global poverty. Full Circle Exchange and their philanthropic partners will match the purchase price of a custom labeled, personalized box of organic chocolates. CARE applies the donation towards empowering girls and women in poverty all over the world. And the love doesn’t end at sunset! A purchase of up to $1 million will be matched through December 31, 2011.
Have you ever heard of something called a Charity Gift? The name spells it out- it’s a gift given to someone in support of a charity, on his/her behalf. There are plenty of times I have politely sprinted pass the GREEN PEACE volunteers outside the grocery store, rationalizing my fantasy donation to be better spent elsewhere. With over 150 charities to choose from, including national and global non-profits, Charity Gift Certificates offer tax deductible donations in which the recipient decides where to sprinkle their love.
The day of l’amour should not be contained! Be it little or large, take a moment to share present reminders of love all year round.
